An unusual farewell gift for Ken Henry
Just after lunch I got a call from an unknown number, prefix 02.
“Aah, you’re calling from interstate!” I pre-empted, in Adelaide we have the prefix 08.
“Yes, from Canberra.” was the reply.
“Oh Canberra” I said, “I like Canberra, I often come to Canberra as my daughter works there.”
“Really?” she replied. “Where does she work here?”
“At the Commonwealth Treasury.”
“How amazing, that’s where I’m calling from – what a coincidence!”
Now why would the Federal Treasury be calling ART LOGIC? Perhaps they needed my advice. Come to think of it, I’d always wondered when they’d call!
“We’re looking for a farewell gift for our boss Ken Henry, the Secretary to the Treasury.” she continued. ” I’ve seen two sculptures of hairy-nosed wombats on your website and am very interested in them. We would like to give him a gift that really means something to him.”
Treasury boss Ken Henry and a Queensland Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat
Ken Henry is passionate about the environment and he and his wife Naomi spent 4 weeks looking after Northern Hairy Nosed Wombats in Queensland. They are in danger of extinction - there are only 138 northern hairy-nosed wombats left.
Well, let me tell you a little bit about those hairy-nosed wombats the Commonwealth Treasury was calling ART LOGIC about. They are tiny bronze sculptures that fit into the palm of your hand.
A Standing Hairy Nosed Wombat and a Scratching Hairy Nosed Wombat
Tim Thomson, one of our sculptors, created them as maquettes (art-speak for models) for a private commission to sculpt a life-sized hairy-nosed wombat. People who lived next to an Adelaide park decided they’d like children to have fun lying and climbing on a sculpture in it, so they paid Tim to make one.
I was thrilled because Ken Henry is one of my heroes. Ken Henry has brains, guts and idealism, all in one. That’s an extraordinary quality for a top public servant.
He led the development of the Treasury wellbeing framework to guide their policy analysis. This came from their mission to improve the wellbeing of the Australian people. My daughter also did research on this topic in Venezuela.
But back to the gorgeous hairy-nosed wombats. A few days later they found themselves on Pack and Send’s scales being weighed in preparation for their trip to Canberra.
How much do two bronze wombats weigh and measure?
They got there the very next afternoon and Ken and his wife thought they were exquisite. And they are!
